Banksy's Blog - December

Is your tree up? Are your presents already wrapped, because they are in my house? Seems to me Christmas has started much earlier this year – maybe people are pinning their hopes on a “normal” Christmas this time around. I’m a Celebrity has been back on the box and we’ve had our own version with various trials and tribulations in recent months, with Storm Arwen, snow, the energy crisis, ongoing COVID and crazy fuel prices at the forecourts.

You’ll be pleased to know I’ve had a good rummage around Santa’s sack this month and I’ve found some great news to tell you about. What did we learn from COP26, new EV products coming soon and another update on our local clean air zones.

Last month, I talked about Sheffield becoming a Clean Air Zone (CAZ), but this month I’d like to tell you about Breathe Better Bradford. Our dealership sits just outside of this CAZ, which is due to come into force in 2022.

For a non-compliant van or minibus, you could be charged £9 per day to enter the CAZ, but the great news is that Bradford City Council are putting some brass on the table for businesses. We’ve had another rascal bout of weather and I wonder if this is yet another sign of global warming. I do know recently it was -3ᵒC one day then a couple of days later, 13ᵒC – that’s a massive swing in temperature. Talking of temperature, after weeks of deliberation and deadline extensions, all countries mutually agreed to keeping global warming to 1.5ᵒC at the conclusion of COP26.

On this subject, I’ve seen some of the FTSE100 companies making commitments to switch to 100% renewable electricity or reduce their greenhouse gases during the production process. Within our business, we’re making the switch to paper-free in our service departments with eWIP. Have you made any pledges to the environment following COP26? It will be interesting to see over the coming months what impact was made off the back of this.

Mercedes-Benz has announced we are now able to quote and take orders on the new eVito 66kWh Van, with production starting in March 2022. It could open up electric to new businesses which is really exciting. The three stand outs for me are: more accessible range at 162 miles WLTP, fast-charge capability and the spec has changed as well. The PROGRESSIVE line receives upgrades and a new PREMIUM line is available for the first time for eVito. Find out more here.

This on the back of the all-new Citan and eCitan which should arrive later in the year. All our electric vans will have fast-charge capabilities and our two new vans have a range that exceeds 150 miles, so exciting times ahead.

In other news, I’ve seen that two London boroughs will reach 1,000 charge points by Christmas. Read the story here: https://www.zap-map.com/hammersmith-fulham-1000-ev-charge-points-christmas. While I appreciate this is London, what we generally see is this infrastructure filtering through to other areas in due course.

It has also been announced that new homes, supermarkets and work places built from next year will be required by law to install charging points. You can read the story here: https://www.zap-map.com/new-homes-buildings-ev-charge-points-2022. It’s great news as that 2030 deadline of petrol and diesel vehicles gets closer and closer. Thank goodness Santa’s sleigh runs on magic, not diesel eh?

Stay safe, have a cracking Christmas and see you next year. All the best, Banksy.
